Tomey Corporation, based in Japan, manufactures a wide range of diagnostic medical devices for ophthalmology – from a simple tonometer to OCT with complex analysis and planning functions.
Their distributors increasingly demanded interoperability – patient data should be automatically obtained by the device and many users want to be able to document important examination and planning results in the PACS, all of which is made possible by an interface for the DICOM communication standard.
Together with the Japanese development team, we have developed a universal DICOM adapter for several devices of different types.
This adapter provides a simple, text-based interface for the devices.
For communication with the clinical systems (e.g. the PACS), the adapter uses DICOMconnect – our certified plug-and-play software solution for easy integration of a DICOM interface into medical devices.
In this way, the Japanese developer team was able to integrate the devices independently without the need for in-depth DICOM know-how. The first device to be integrated was the flagship of the product range – the CASIA2 OCT. This was followed by the MR-6000 multifunctional system, and further devices are in the pipeline.
As of summer 2024, around 100 Tomey devices worldwide are running with this DICOMconnect-based interface. The number increases every week.
